New Museum Brings A Different Kind of Flashing Lights To The City

Baltimore added a piece of American nostalgia to its list of attractions with the January arrival of the National Pinball Machine Museum. The museum relocated from Georgetown in Washington, D.C. to downtown Baltimore on Water Street.

The 14,000 square-feet museum houses vintage machines dating back to the 1940s. There are over 800 machines in the collection, located throughout several rooms that chronicle the history of pinball machines. The museum also provides a reference library of books, periodicals, catalogs, and other materials relating to pinball.

However, what true fan can be around the lights and sounds of a pinball machines and bear to obey a “Do Not Touch” sign? Luckily, visitors don’t have to. The museum prides itself on being a hands-on experience and features interactive exhibits. Enthusiasts can indulge in over 50 machines located inside the museum’s pay-to-play area. Proceeds from the machines help to fund scholarships for low-income youth to participate in the museum’s educational programs.

The museum is open on Fridays through Sundays. Admission for ages 7 and up ranges from $12-$25, depending on how long visitors choose to play in the Pinhead Gallery. Visitors familiar with the pinball machines of their youth, will be transported back in time with the sights and sounds of flippers, crashing balls, vibrant artwork, and the flashing lights of eras past.
